Giraffes in danger

We recently celebrated World Giraffe Conservation Day to raise awareness and raise money to donate to the only existing conservation charity focussing solely on conservation of this species- The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). Thank you to all of you who attended and those who continue to visit our shop and express their interest in this gentle giant. Giraffes are such familiar animals that for some it is surprising to hear they face many challenges to survive in the wild. Many of these challenges are from human activities.. Here are a few facts:

• A 40% decline in numbers in the last 30 years

• Giraffes are now listed as 'vulnerable’ on the IUCN list

• Recent research has show there are 4 distinct species of giraffe when it was previously thought there was only 1. Giraffes only live in Africa.

• Largest land mammal - standing at over 5m tall.

• A giraffes heart weights 11 kg. A human heart weights 11 ounces!
